Student Leadership

Student Leadership and Student Voice

At Harris Academy Riverside, student leadership is at the heart of our school community. Our Student Council members are carefully selected students who consistently demonstrate our core traits: kindness, grit, responsibility, confidence, and zest. These students don’t just talk about character—they live it, setting a powerful example for their peers.

Our Student Council members are visible role models across the school. They welcome visitors warmly, mentor younger students, and help foster a culture of respect and high standards. Working alongside staff, they promote positive behaviour, encourage peers to make responsible choices, and ensure our character values are embedded in everyday school life.

Leadership opportunities continue across the school through Student Council teams: Student Experience, Teaching and Learning, and Fundraising and Events. Council members are carefully chosen through a formal interview process, giving students the chance to demonstrate their leadership potential, communication skills, and commitment to the school community. This process ensures that every council member is ready to represent their peers effectively, contribute ideas, and collaborate with staff to make meaningful changes. Hot Chocolate Fridays also provide an informal space for students to share feedback and discuss school life with senior staff.

In Key Stage 4, Student Council members can also progress to Head Boy or Head Girl, taking on additional responsibility for representing the student body, leading projects, and working closely with staff to shape school life.

In the Sixth Form, our Interact Club and Sixth Form Leadership Team play a key role in guiding and mentoring the Student Council. They support council members in their projects, help with interviews for leadership positions, and provide leadership that spans the whole school. Sixth Form leaders have successfully organised events including the Shoebox Appeal and Remembrance Day, demonstrating responsibility, initiative, and commitment to the community.

Student leaders - whether in Key Stage 3, 4, or Sixth Form - take part in community projects, assemblies, house events, and school initiatives. They are trusted voices who champion equality, inclusivity, and positive values while helping shape the future of the school.

Becoming a Student Council member, Head Boy or Head Girl, or part of the Sixth Form leadership team is a significant achievement. It recognises students who embody our values and are ready to influence others through their example. These leaders develop confidence, communication, and organisational skills that serve them well both in school and beyond.

Above all, our student leaders show that character and voice are not just ideals - they are practised, celebrated, and shared every day.
