Ms Hughes is Senior Assistant Principal for Key Stage 4, where she plays a pivotal role in ensuring all students are supported to achieve their ambitions. She is driven by a deep belief that GCSEs are a crucial stepping stone, opening doors to future opportunities and enabling young people to make meaningful choices as they move into further education and the world of work. Her work is underpinned by a commitment to ensuring every student is prepared to compete and succeed in an increasingly global society.
Ms Hughes’ passion for education was shaped through her own academic journey, beginning at Westcliff High School for Girls and continuing at Canterbury Christ Church University, where she studied Marketing with English. She later completed her TESOL qualification, travelling to Nigeria and China to broaden her understanding of global education systems. These experiences continue to inform her inclusive and outward-looking approach to leadership.
Before entering senior leadership, Ms Hughes worked as an EAL consultant in Thurrock and has over 13 years’ experience teaching in schools across Thurrock and Basildon. A former Head of English, she completed the NPQSL before progressing to Assistant Principal. She is also the designated teacher for looked-after children and leads on pupil premium, reflecting her strong commitment to equity and ensuring every child, regardless of background, receives a rich and ambitious education.
She takes particular pride in key moments of the HARI school year, including Culture Day and GCSE Results Day—celebrations that reflect both the diversity of the school community and the achievement of its students. For Ms Hughes, these moments capture what education is about: recognising identity, celebrating success, and ensuring every student leaves with a sense of pride and possibility.
