Mrs Smith

Assistant Principal

Ms Smith graduated from the University of Durham with a degree in English Literature, specialising in dystopian fiction, before completing her teacher training through the National Institute of Teaching. She began her career in Barking & Dagenham, working in a community school serving a diverse and disadvantaged intake, which later achieved an Outstanding judgement. During her time there, Ms Smith played a key role in developing whole-school literacy, working across departments on a writing initiative and contributing to the redesign of the Key Stage 4 English curriculum. She has also worked as an AQA examiner for both English Language and Literature, developing expertise in curriculum design, assessment and standards.

After seven years in education, Ms Smith joined the Harris Federation as Head of English, where she worked alongside consultants to redesign the Harris Riverside curriculum through a thematic, spiral approach that built progressively on key themes and skills. Three years later, she was promoted to Assistant Principal, leading on Personal Development and Literacy. Since starting the role, Ms Smith has introduced a Morning Read programme that combines foundational reading skills with personal development themes. She has also expanded opportunities for students through community initiatives and student leadership programmes, while leading the development of the RSHE and Citizenship curriculum to ensure it is relevant, inclusive and aligned with the school’s values.
