Science

Investigation and experiments; writing up and required practicals

A crucial aspect of the learning of Science is the ability for students to be able to design, perform and write up an experiment. Students will use the following headings and should be very familiar with that they mean.  The format for writing up an experiment is as follows;

1.       Aims

2.       Method,

3.       Variables; independent, dependent, controlled

4.       Risks,

5.       Expected results

6.       What the results mean; showing results in a suitable format

7.       Evaluation;

·         are results accurate, precise, repeatable, reproducible

Students carry out a number of ‘required practicals’ throughout their academic career. These can be seen on the year 7 overview.

BBC Bitesize is a good source of information on Science.

The following is a brief overview of topics taught in year 7.

·         Forces

·         Atoms, elements and compounds

·         Electricity

·         Inside cells

·         Electromagnetism

·         Gas exchange

·         Chemical reactions

·         States of matter

·         Properties of matter

·         Nutrition

·         Waves

·         Environment

·         Earth and rocks

·         Polymers, ceramics and composites

Forces

What is a force?

·         Push and pull forces,

·         contact and non contact forces (e.g., gravity)

·         balanced and unbalanced forces, the effects of direction and size of force

The effects of forces

·         Speed, direction, shape, heat

Measuring and showing forces

·         Newton and the Newton Meter

·         Forces diagrams

·         Hanging, floating and standing diagrams

Friction, air resistance and streamlining

Moments

·         Calculating and using moments

·         Machines and pivots

Deformation caused by forces

·         Elasticity

·         Stretching, extension and compression

·         Hooke’s Law

·         Force extension graphs
